July Book Reviews

July 2023

Butterface by Avery Flynn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I picked this up on a whim, looking for a light read. It mostly delivered.

I was expecting a typical romance read, but this had a mini murder mystery thrown in, which was unexpected. The trip to the end was engaging and worth the journey.

I recommend this read.

The Department of Truth, Vol 1: The End of the World by James Tynion IV

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I picked this up for a bookclub read. I went into it thinking that I would enjoy it. I enjoyed that it was a quick read, but other than that, I wasn't a big fan. The conspiracy theories that are discussed are interesting, and they were presented well. The art is in line with the confusion of the story, which is good. The story just didn't speak to me the way I expected it to.

I wouldn't necessarily not recommend it, but it definitely wasn't a favorite this year.

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I picked this up because I enjoyed the movie so much, and I wanted to see how it differed from the movie. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if I hadn't had the casting and the difference in the story from the movie skewing my view of the story in the book.

I enjoyed this quick, easy read and would recommend it.

West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked this up after receiving several recommendations. I loved it! It took off a little slow, but I got to the point where I needed to know what was going to happen next.

It was such a beautiful story and I recommend that everyone read it. It was well worth it.
